  1. The British ruled this area from 1805 until 1978.  Just one year after its
  2. independence the island was hit by Hurricane David.  This destroyed many
  3. banana plantations, which are a mainstay of Dominica's economy.  Coups were
  4. attempted in 1980 and 1981.  Dominica was important in the 1983 Grenada
  5. invasion by the United States for logistical support.
